Abstract

Universities are currently required to improve institutional quality to be able to compete globally. An excellent academic culture is needed to encourage lecturers to be more productive in publication achievement to achieve the goal. In the last two decades, lecturers and universities have demanded publication targets in reputable indexed international journals, such as Scopus and the Web of Sciences, which have become benchmarks for this achievement. Therefore, it needs the support of academic culture in which lecturers can work comfortably. However, the problem is that there is no detailed description of what kind of academic culture in higher education can encourage lecturers to be more productive. This study aims to identify lecturers’ perspectives at a university in Indonesia about excellent academic culture. Q-methodology was used to identify and explain the subjectivity of research subjects. The results showed two viewpoints on creating excellent academic culture, one of which is excellent academic culture due to less administrative works. Another viewpoint is the responsibility of university leaders in making better academic culture. This research implies that the two viewpoints are completed by each other. The lecturer feels more comfortable improving their productivity and not because there is a reward from publication achievement.
