This conference, held from the 14–16 of August 2024 in Durban, South Africa, brought together scholars, educators, policymakers, and practitioners from around the country. The purpose was to engage in a thoughtful and constructive dialogue on a topic of paramount importance in today’s South Africa: the role of higher education in the country’s journey over the past three decades of democracy. The conference brings together leading scholars, academics, policymakers, and practitioners in the higher education and TVET sectors to share their research and express their perspectives concerning the conference theme and sub-themes. The past three decades have witnessed significant transformations in the higher education landscape, influenced by the wave of democratization that swept across the globe. This conference provided a platform to delve into the complex interplay between democracy and higher education, examining the achievements, challenges, and impact of this dynamic relationship. These proceedings capture the essence of the vibrant discussions and insightful presentations that took place during the conference.
