Welcome to the Proceedings of the Focus Conference (TFC 2024). With the theme “Three Decades of Democracy: Reflecting on Higher Education Achievements, Challenges, Impact and the Future”, this conference, held from the 14–16 of August 2024 in Durban, South Africa, brought together scholars, educators, policymakers, and practitioners from around the country. The purpose was to engage in a thoughtful and constructive dialogue on a topic of paramount importance in today’s South Africa: the role of higher education in the country’s journey over the past three decades of democracy.
