Abstract

As a literary work, Coastal poetry has undergone a crucial transformation in a changing era that always develops. It is also used as a platform for education and da’wah. This article aims to reveal the process and implementation of coastal poetry transformation into musical expression. Transformation aims to keep the relevance and attraction of coastal poetry among the youth without reducing or omitting the essence and values of local culture. The qualitative research with a case study approach is applied in this research to investigate the adaptation of coastal poetry elements, such as lyrics, melody, and rhythm into musical expression. Moreover, analysis of music recordings with coastal poetry, observations, and interviews with modern musicians and traditional artists were conducted for data collection purposes. This research found that the collaboration of modern musicians and the use of digital technology has let the coastal poetry to be combined into modern musical compositions without losing its traditional essence. Furthermore, there are several challenges found, such as resistance from traditionalist groups and the limitations of traditional media. It is an effective latest step in preserving cultural sustainability and enriching contemporary Indonesia’s music. Hence, further collaboration between traditional and modern art practitioners can expand the potential.
