Abstract

A predicate equalizer is a predicate that equates the meaning of its content to that of the subject. In short, the subject is the same as the predicate: S=P. What is interesting about the predicate equalizer is the presence of the copula. This study aims to find the manifestation of the copula in Japanese and the relationship of the meaning of the predicate equivocation to the subject. This research use descriptive qualitative to describe the results. The data are sentences containing copula predicates from data sources such as Minna no Nihongo Shokyu textbook and B.C.C.W.J. Online Japanese Data Corpus. Data collection used the observational method while Data analysis used referential and distributional. The results of the data analysis show that there are three types of Japanese equating predicates: predicates without copula, predicates with nonverbal copula (da, dearu, and desu), and predicates with dynamic verb copula (ninaru). Meanwhile, there are at least 11 types of relationships between the meaning of the predicate equivocator and the subject, namely the relationship of role identification, identification of nature or character, place of existence, location, choice, time, quantity, quality, explanation, state, and expressing action/activity.
