Small Talks ‘Ayo Makan!’ as Indonesian Culture of Communication

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to 1) describe the use of the small talk ‘Ayo Makan!’ in the context of daily communication, and 2) describe the response to the small talk ‘Ayo Makan!’ in the context of daily communication. Gossip is one of the cultural approaches that can be integrated in daily life and in learning. This research is a quantitative research with a questionnaire method. The object of this study is the Indonesian people as native Indonesian speakers who know the culture of small talk. The results of the study showed that the use of the platitude ‘Ayo Makan!’ showed that the frequency of always being said/heard by the speaker/speaking partner was 17.6%, the frequency of being often said/heard was 45.1%, the frequency of sometimes being said/heard was 19.6%, the frequency of being rarely said/heard was 11.8%, and the frequency of never being said/heard was 5.9%. The response was ‘Ayo Makan!’ shows the frequency of 39.2% of Indonesians accepting offers, while as many as 11.8% of Indonesians reject offers. Then, as many as 11.8% responded depending on the situation, while another 21.6% felt happy and 15.7% of Indonesians gave a modest response.
