Abstract

This study investigates how the translation of Budi Darma’s novel Orang-Orang Bloomington reflects and reshapes the ideational meaning of the original text. Employing a social semiotic approach, the research analyzes the role of register, lexis, and grammar in meaning construction within the translated text. The research employed a qualitative design with content analysis techniques. The findings indicate that the translation largely preserves the core ideational meaning of the original text, including activities, emotions, and temporal contexts. Social semiotic factors are well-adapted to ensure understanding by the target audience without losing the cultural background of the source language. The translation sometimes includes additional details or emphasizes certain aspects to enhance clarity or create a stronger emotional impact. This may involve providing clearer explanations, highlighting specific details, or adopting a different stylistic tone. In all, this study highlights the importance of analyzing ideational meaning in translation to ensure the accurate conveyance of the author’s message and the richness of the original text.
