- Abstract
Islam is a religion of “rahmatan lil ‘alamin,” meaning a mercy to all the worlds, or a religion that brings blessings (goodness) and peace. Therefore, Muslims, wherever they are, should spread peace and not hostility. This concept has been embraced and proposed by Nurcholish Madjid. In various opportunities and his writings, we can see that Nurcholish Madjid often educates the Indonesian Muslim community, in particular, to practice Islam in a way that brings blessings to all the worlds. This kind of practice can be translated as the ideal practice of Islam in the Indonesian context. According to Nurcholish Madjid, the ideal practice of Islam is for Muslims to embody the values of Pancasila. Pancasila is part of the implementation of the teachings of Islam that are “rahmatan lil ‘alamin.” Pancasila is a common platform, “kalimatun sawa,” a basis of mutual agreement among society for the good of Indonesia in regulating interactions between individuals and institutions. It is clear that the comprehensive acceptance of Pancasila by the Islamic community as a foundation for the nation and state is a form of ideal Islamic practice within the framework of Indonesian identity.
