Abstract

This research aims to analyze the role of literature in breaking down gender stereotypes and fighting for equality. The subject matter raised is how literature can function as a critical tool in opposing and changing social norms that limit gender roles. The research method used is qualitative research by collecting data based on sentence and conversation quotations contained in the novel. The method of data collection involves reading the novel in depth, noting relevant quotations, and then relating the findings to the interdisciplinary study of literary sociology of Karl Marx’s Hegemony. The analysis technique used was data triangulation to ensure the validity of the findings. The results showed three main findings: (1) patriarchal cultural domination, (2) social class, and (3) gender ideology. The conclusion of this study confirms that literary works have great potential in fighting for gender equality and are able to become significant agents of social change by depicting resistance to patriarchal norms and have important implications in education and social awareness.
