Abstract

In Indonesia, electronic portfolios for teaching English, especially writing, have been used for the last decade. This study investigates students' perceptions of their writing development and problems in implementing Electronic Reflective Portfolios in an Indonesian EFL writing class. A case study was used to analyze 31 fourth-semester students' perceptions, and problems in writing activities. Questionnaires and interviews were used to get the data. The research found that students' writing abilities were improved by using electronic reflecting portfolios. Students could work on their writing assignments on an electronic portfolio site without feeling awkward. It pushed them to produce better writing that was read, shared, and remarked on by their peers. Concerning the problems faced by the students, the finding showed that many of them were unfamiliar with the use of e-portfolio in their writing. The issues with Internet connectivity and the way they comment on their friends' writing were also found in this study. The study also demonstrated that teachers must develop their responsibilities and readiness to support students in an e-learning environment to apply the Electronic Reflective Portfolio in writing classes successfully.
