Abstract

This research aims to raise the issue of poverty and crime in the slums of Jakarta in the novel the darkest side of heaven by Brian Khrisna. This type of research is qualitative with sociology of literature approach. The re- search data are in the form of sentences, fragments of paragraphs, and whole paragraphs that describe the problems of poverty and crime in the novel. The data were obtained using reading and note-taking techniques which were then analyzed using descriptive interpretative techniques (content analysis). The re- sults showed that the social problems that occur in Jakarta are dominated by poverty and crime. From the novel, the author tries to convey to readers, espe- cially policy makers, that the problem can be one of the references on how to handle these two problems in the city of Jakarta.
