Abstract

This study emerges from observing persistent challenges faced by Indonesian learners of Arabic, mainly due to negative transfer from their native languages. In many educational settings in Indonesia, learners struggle with linguistic and cultural aspects of Arabic that differ significantly from their first languages. This study aims to analyze the effects of negative transfer from the languages spoken by Indonesian learners on acquiring Arabic. Negative transfer is a phenomenon where elements of the first language (L1) adversely affect the learning process of a second language (L2). This study focuses on two significant types of negative transfer: linguistic negative transfer and cultural negative transfer. From a linguistic perspective, negative transfer is evaluated through phonetic aspects, lexical collocation, word order, and grammatical structures. Many learners of Arabic in Indonesia struggle with pronouncing specific phonemes that do not exist in their native languages. Additionally, lexical collocations, sentence structures, and grammatical rules from their native languages often influence how learners use Arabic. From a cultural perspective, the negative transfer is evident in using social phrases and communication etiquette derived from Indonesian cultural norms. This leads to misunderstandings and mismatches in communication with native Arabic speakers. Based on these findings, this study highlights the need for further research to develop effective methods for mitigating these negative transfer effects, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of Arabic language acquisition among Indonesian learners. This research is expected to significantly contribute to second language acquisition, particularly in the context of learning Arabic in Indonesia.
