- Abstract
This paper discusses the existence of orality in modern Indonesian short stories from a critical literary ethnographic perspective. The orality referred to is taboos and prohibitions in Madurese culture, which are embodied in several short stories by Muna Masyari, namely Kandung Kembar, Burung Tua, and Pamengkang. The critical literary ethnographic approach in this research de- scribes cultural articulations and provides space for critically interpreting and dismantling ideological operations. The results of this research show that there are three cultural orientations. First, there is a taboo and prohibition narrative about Madurese women, which has relevance to their social and spiritual con- struction. Second, self-esteem as a Madurese human being is also found in the text, especially taboos and prohibitions related to dignity as a man and husband. Third, the abstinence and prohibition narrative related to the role of Madurese women in ecological issues.
