Love on the Plate: The Impact of Gender and the Length of Marriage on Spousal Food Portion Sizes

Abstract

Eating behaviours, particularly food portions in marital contexts, have been understudied despite the fact that excessive eating behaviour increases the risk of various health issues. This study aims to explore how gender and the length of marriage influence individuals’ decisions regarding food portions for their spouse. A quasi-experimental design involving 104 participants (male and female, married, and no food allergies), food portions were measured using the Fake Food Buffet (FFB). The study found a significant negative effect of length of marriage on food portions given to spouses, but no significant effect of gender or interaction between gender and length of marriage. Future research could consider measuring food preferences to provide a more comprehensive understanding of eating behaviour in a marital context.
