Abstract

This research investigates how peer-based collaboration during vocational apprenticeships helps civil engineering students in Indonesia learn and grow. We use qualitative research methods to explore this topic in detail. Our study is guided by the Community of Practice Theory, which provides a framework for understanding how students learn through working together. Community of Practice Theory includes several important ideas. Community participation and membership means that students are part of a group where they learn and work together. Mutual engagement and shared practice refer to how students interact with each other and work on common tasks, sharing their knowledge and skills. Learning as social participation highlights that students learn by being involved in group activities and discussions. Boundary crossing and community development involve students moving between different groups or areas of knowledge and helping to build and improve their learning community. In our research, we look at how these aspects of Community of Practice Theory apply to apprenticeships. We examine how students work together, share their experiences, and support each other. We also explore how students learn by participating in these collaborative activities and how moving between different groups helps them grow. This study aims to show how working closely with peers in apprenticeships helps civil engineering students develop their skills and knowledge effectively.
