- Abstract
Juan Marsé’s novel was written during Franco’s rule in Spain in the 1960s. The urban images in the work reflect various problems existing in the society at that time, and gradually become a display of the environment and revelation of the spiritual crisis of the Spanish dictatorship. This article takes his masterpiece “The Shanghai Spell” as an example, by analyzing the city image in the work, it intends to explore the critical tendency of the dark and suppressed atmosphere of Franco’s rule, and to give a deeper social significance to the city images in his work.
