- Abstract
This essay analyzes the significance of both foreign ideology and domestic reforms on the origin and evolution of the world-known American Psychological Association (APA). By examining early psychology texts since the Enlightenment era, this essay mainly argues the undeniable role of foreign ideology in the formation of psychology as an independent discipline and the development of American academic psychology which served as the foundation of the establishment of APA. Therefore, despite psychologists’ assertions that domestic reforms during the Progressive Era directly shaped the future of the American Psychological Association and allowed American psychology to develop in its distinctive way, this essay argues that the American Psychological Association would not have become the accessible, disciplined organization with members from diverse backgrounds that it is nowadays without the influence of foreign ideology.
