Abstract

The stone terrace of Gunung Padang site located at the top of the mount, a couple of years ago had become polemic as the oldest pyramid in the world. Based on the results of the research, until now it did not find all data to support it. From archaeological thought, the stone terrace in the prehistoric era was known and described as a place for religious practice. It can be recorded as one of the structures built by modifying nature sources (columnar joints) that were part of the ancient volcanic products of the prehistoric society that lived around the site in the past. Geologically, Gunung Padang is a part of the archaic volcano around 1–2 million years ago. Descriptively, the stone terrace of the Gunung Padang site consists of five terraces, starting with the well as a place to purify themselves, then at the top of the hill, there are five terraces. To reach the five terraces from the well connected by a stone staircase which is also made of the columnar joint. This paper aims to explore how past societies modified the natural resources of the mountains for their religious needs and how those aspects of religion (ancestor worship activity) were done at the Gunung Padang in the past.
