Abstract

Pluralism is a phenomenon that humans cannot avoid. God has created humans in pluralism and humans have become part of pluralism itself, as well as in religious matters. Each religion emerged in a pluralistic environment and formed itself in response to this pluralism. If religious pluralism is not properly understood by religious adherents, it can have negative impacts in the form of conflict between religious believers and national disintegration. The research aims to analyze students’ critical thinking skills regarding stereotypes of folk religion and state religion. The study focuses on causality thinking between because motive and in order to motive. The research subjects were high school students in West Surabaya as an area that is fertile in the practice of folk religion in the midst of the majority of society, Islam as the state religion. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with research subjects selected using an incidental sampling approach. The credibility test was carried out using a data source triangulation approach. Qualitative data analysis uses Schutz’s because motive and in order to motive analysis techniques.
