“Change and Continuity in Southeast Asia”

There is no permanent and unchanging self, society, nor territory. This includes Southeast Asia, which also always shown changes—as a region and a community—since its inception to the present. These changes have different pace, whether rapid, moderate, or slow change. Rapid change—in Fernand Braudel’s concept referred to as “événementielle”—occurred for example in a rapidly changing political sphere. Moderate changes or “conjuctures” are occurring in the social and cultural sphere. The geographical aspect often undergoes a slow change or “longue durée” so that it seems as if there is no change at all. In addition to changes, some aspects of Southeast Asia also seem to be experiencing historical continuity from the past. These two aspects, change and continuity, are important to be studied not only from scientific point of view but also have practical benefits to maintain the resilience of Southeast Asia.

Historically, Southeast Asia was “imagined” region formed after the Second World War. At that time, various countries of the former Western colonies turned into independent states. Since the emergence of the independent states, it has been followed by the rise of many Southeast Asian Studies. Like other regional studies, Southeast Asian Studies originates from the colonial and geopolitical interest of the Western countries to understand social change in various Southeast Asian countries, especially in the postcolonial context, which later in its development seeks to provide greater space for narratives originating from Asian perspectives. In this context, it is important to study further, how the change and continuity historically occurred in Southeast Asia.

Geographically, the Southeast Asia is a region which is located in the southeastern region of Asia. This area is divided into two subregions, namely the mainland of Southeast Asia and the archipelago of Southeast Asia. This area is also located between two large continents, Eurasia and Australia, as well as located between two oceans, namely the Indian and Pacific. It is also worth mentioning here that Southeast Asia is also located in area crossed by two belts of fires. Firstly, the Circum-Pacific Belt—commonly referred as the Ring of Fire–is a volcanic passage that surrounds the Pacific Ocean region. Secondly, the Mediterranean Volcanic Belt which stretches from Europe to Southeast Asia. These circumstances make the Southeast Asian region very vulnerable to natural disasters, both from land and ocean. The occurrence of natural disasters usually has a direct impact with the geographical changes and at the same time has various impacts on social changes. Although sometimes some people in Southeast Asia consider that disasters are not calamities but gifts, so their daily lives continue as usual.

Socio-culturally, people in the Southeast Asian region have a heterogeneous composition. This diversity can be seen from the large number of ethnic compositions that inhabit the region. For example, in Indonesia, there are already various ethnic groups, not yet to mention in other regions such as Malaysia, Philippine, and others. The diversity of these ethnic groups is directly proportional to the variety of languages that exist in Southeast Asia. Similarly with the languages, the culture in these ethnic groups is definitely diverse. Interestingly, this diversity is constantly changing, keeping up with the global changes. These changes are important to study, in order to get an overview of the socio-cultural changes and continuity that currently exist in the Southeast Asian region.

The various changes and continuity that occur historically, geographically, and socioculturally mentioned above will also have various impacts on the educational aspect. Therefore, it is also pivotal to examine the various change and continuity that occur in the field of education of Southeast Asia. This is because the field of education will determine where Southeast Asia will be taken in the future.
