- Abstract
Health resilience is crucial for maintaining a country’s wealth and stability. However, debate continues regarding the conceptualization and operationalization of health resilience for research and practice purposes. This article aims to analyze the unique concept of ‘Health Resilience’. This article explores various existing concepts and examples through a literature review. Resilience is a term that requires clear definition, as its broad use in everyday discussions has often been described as “millennium Rorschach” due to its varied interpretation by different individuals. Rooted in developmental psychology, resilience has been extensively studied as a dynamic process of effectively adapting to adversities or challenges within the framework of developmental psychopathology. Resilience is best understood as the outcome of successful adaptation to adversities, while health refers to a condition of overall well-being. The focus on resilience has emphasized the importance of recovery and sustainability when facing challenges. ‘Health Resilience’ is defined as the outcome of successful adaptation in dealing with adversities in terms of physical and mental welfare. Physical resilience refers to the body’s ability to withstand physical stress, endure prolonged physical activity, and recover quickly from injuries or fatigue. Meanwhile, mental resilience pertains to an individual’s ability to cope with emotional pressures, trauma, stress, and other challenging situations. These dimensions of resilience are not only significant on their own but also mutually reinforce each other, fostering holistic well-being. Moreover, the focus on resilience underscores the importance of recovery and sustainability in the context of challenges. Recovery highlights the process of returning to physical, psychological, and social balance after experiencing adversities, requiring appropriate support and intervention. On the other hand, sustainability refers to the ability to maintain long-term well-being through deliberate, proactive actions aimed at preserving balance and planning for the future. This study contributes to bridging the gap between academic insights and practical applications of health resilience.
