Abstract

Banyuwangi is known as a sulfur producer in Indonesia. Sulfur mining activities in the crater of Ijen is a traditional activity passed from the older age groups to the younger ones, of the community around Ijen crater that has existed since 1968. Work as a sulfur miner is too risky because sulfur gas that sting will later make breathing becomes congested. Risks that occur due to sulfur mining will affect the onset of several diseases. This research is a qualitative research. The research location was in the Ijen crater in the village of Tamansari District of Licin Sub-district of Banyuwangi. Data obtained from observations and interviews. Informants in this study were men in their age of 20-40 years. The working period is 10-20 years as a sulfur miner. The results of this research shows that traditional herbal concoction is used because the sulfur miners in Ijen crater live side by side with nature and still utilize nature as a means of prevention and treatment of diseases. The sulfur miners use traditional herbal medicine because it is still considered effective and practical compared to having to use modern medicine. Traditional herbal concoction is considered effective and practical because of limited access to medical facilities due to the long distance they have to take to reach a hospital. These reinforce their use of traditional medications for curing and preventing diseases that they usually have from the cold weather and the mining activities.
