- Abstract
Society has made smartphone become the symbol of prestige and supported the existence of people in cyberspace. Social media give the space for recognizing others by not conducting face-to-face interaction process and becoming the place to disseminate daily activities occurred in their life due to the presence of symbol system, social status, value, and reward. The development of the technology has made fetters in any aspects of human life and smartphone becomes a divider between real and unreal lives. This article tries to reveal the changing need fulfillment in consumption rationality in smartphone usage by using media study with the data deriving from reliable sources, library study to analyze in-depth the problem raised. In order to analyze, this article uses Baudrillard’s theory and Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) theory. The result showed that there was a change in need fulfillment related to consumption rationality, characterized with the rapid technology development particularly in communication sector in the presence of smartphone with various sophistications offered. It affected consumption rationality and technology acceptance and created new spaces in smartphone technology as a quasi-reality as the opposite of the reality. In addition, the smartphone technology has led a new virtual society and engage public in the sort participation in order for democracy to thrive.
