- Abstract
Television in Peru is the media with the greatest reach potential, because more than 80% of the population airs television at least once a week. Television has omitted certain social groups in its transmissions such as LGBTIQ+ community. They have historically been a marginalised sector suffering widespread violence and discrimination. This study analyses the representation of LGBTIQ+ characters in three Peruvian TV series. We used a qualitative methodology with a hermeneutic approach. The results show that, although LGBTIQ+ characters are present in these series, their representation is limited to stereotypes that encourage mockery. Moreover, the topics addressed by these characters focus on the problems they face due to their sexual orientation or gender identity. We concluded that, although there are more conversations regarding the acceptance and rejection of homophobia in Peru, the representation of the LGBTIQ+ community is limited only to ‘G’ or gay, resulting in a lack of diversity and inclusion of other sexual orientations and gender identities.
