Abstract

The participation of first-time voters in elections is not only a crucial initial step, but also holds significant potential in shaping the lifelong civic engagement habits of young individuals as active citizens. In the upcoming 2024 election, 22.85% of the total voters belong to Gen-Z as first-time voters who demonstrate their awareness and eagerness to participate in politics and contribute to future changes. This article aims to highlight the barriers faced by first-time voters in their journey toward engagement in forthcoming elections and explores efforts that can be made to enhance their participation. The article uses a descriptive quantitative method with a mixed questionnaire as the research instrument, consisting of open and closed questions for student respondents as first-time voters. The results of the questionnaire show a lack of information about elections and candidates, an apolitical attitude towards electoral education, and a non-holistic Civic Education for first-time voters that can hinder them from getting involved and playing an active role in elections. Furthermore, this research presents a model of community engagement for first-time voters that can be pursued within the framework of Civic education, so that first-time voters can become active citizens before, during, and after elections as a pattern of active engagement that goes beyond political action.
