- Abstract
Students with special needs have the right to obtain proper education and adequate learning facilities. Deaf students often face difficulties translating mathematical symbols they must learn from a mathematical course. This research and development (R&D) research aims to produce a product in the form of a mathematical symbol sign language dictionary for deaf students in higher education. The development design is a unified modeling language (UML) that includes preparing use case diagrams, activity diagrams, sequence diagrams, and class diagrams. The development method is design research, including the preliminary, prototyping, and assessment stages. The resulting product is an android application that can translate mathematical symbols in written form into sign language in video format as an output. The product is validated by mathematics, sign language, and learning media experts. The product was tested on 15 deaf students in courses that use mathematical symbols. The test results show that the product is suitable for use and meets valid, practical, and effective criteria. This product can facilitate the problem of translating mathematical symbols between lecturers and deaf students in higher education.
