Abstract

Applying specific learning strategies is widely claimed to improve critical thinking skills, but this success sometimes does not consider covariates in the research design. This study aims to explain the role of learning interest and prior knowledge as covariates in improving critical thinking skills. The method used is quantitative research with quasi-experimental. Students participate in problem-based learning and measure learning interest, prior knowledge, and critical thinking skills. Learning interest is calculated using a questionnaire. Prior knowledge and critical thinking skills were measured using essay test questions. The analysis using Paired Sample T-tests in both groups showed an increase in critical thinking skills in the experimental and control groups individually. However, the research with ANCOVA indicates that there is no difference in critical thinking skills in the two groups by considering learning interests and prior knowledge. Results also suggest that learning interest can be a predictor in a model with a high effective contribution and vice versa for PKP. The findings of this study explain that the increase in critical thinking skills is not due to the applied learning strategy but because of learning interest. Similar research must pay attention to the level of learning implementation to ensure a clear difference in the learning received by students between the two groups.
