- ABSTRACT
The article from this research contains a discussion of gender relations in Indonesian modern literary texts by male authors. This research is a descriptive qualitative study. Data on gender relations is obtained through a search of the narrator’s speech as well as the speeches and actions of the characters in the story of a novel by a male author of modern Indonesian literature from Minangkabau and Javanese. The data source of this research is the story text of the novel Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck by Hamka and the Canting novel by Arswendo Atmowiloto. The study of gender relations in both novels of the two male authors from Minangkabau and Jawa uses the sociological theory of literature as used by Damono (1987), Junus (1986 and 1993), and Hasanuddin WS (2015). The theory used by these three researchers is in line with the theory put forward by Wellek and Warren (2014) and Swingewood (1972a and 1972b) that literary texts can be considered as recorders of people’s lives in a certain period of time and in a certain place. Literary text in the view of literary sociology can be considered as a sociocultural document which is a reflection and or refraction of the social reality of the society of the era. Based on the research findings, gender relations in the community adhering to the matriarchal and patriarchal social systems contained in the two novels are the demands of the male author in the form of equal gender relations. Men of authors who come from different societies embracing the cultural system want the realization of justice by deconstructing and empowering women to obtain maximum access in terms of education, employment and decision making. The male author makes the values of gender equality as a form of learning raises awareness of justice that is closely related to living tolerance, respecting achievement, caring for each other among people, living more morally, and love the peaceful living space.
