The establishment of a learning society that advocates lifelong learning for all citizens calls for the development of learning communities. The advancement of educational digitization has provided support in terms of resources and technology for the construction of learning communities. Smartphones, with their advantages as resource providers, environment creators and emotion supporter, contribute to the construction of English learning communities from multiple aspects. Based on this, a new circular framework is put forward to explain the functions the smartphones play. An empirical study on the practical implementation of construction of English learning communities assisted by smartphones was carried out. The survey results show that the learners are more likely to have better learning grades and higher English proficiency in English learning communities assisted by smartphones.
