- Abstract
The near-death experience (NDE) is an unusual out-of-body incident taking place on the brink of death which is recounted by a person on recovery. With globalization of media, the retellings of these personal experiences have become a commonplace phenomenon, fascinating many people around the world regardless of the nationality, religious orientation or any other living circumstances of both the experiencers and their audiences. Following this trend, in 2020 the channel 4 of Iranian television premiered Life after Life a TV series broadcast during Ramadan. Gaining popularity among Iranians, this reality TV series has reached its third season in 2022. Despite the apparent authenticity of the NDE accounts in Life after Life, this television program creatively combines a selection of these personal narratives with religious specialists’ exegeses, transforming individuals’ experiences into televisual hegemony. Using an ideological analysis, this study explains how the cultural foundation and powerful stories of Shi’ism are represented and reaffirmed as reality.
