- Abstract
China has nearly 1.4 billion people, of whom 238 million of children under 15 years old. In recent years, the rapid economic development and social reform have had a major impact on the mental health of children and adolescents. Although China lacks a nationwide study on the prevalence of mental disorders in children and adolescents, some regional studies have shown that the prevalence of mental disorders in children is close to 20% of the global level. This article reviews the current status of mental disorders in Chinese children, the prevalence of specific disorders in China, and the impact of culture on the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders in children and adolescents. Several important social issues are discussed, including the one-child policy and the left-behind children. The change of family structure and the increasingly fierce competition have weakened the traditional social support system. As a result, children's behavioral problems, emotional disorders among young college students, drug abuse and suicide rates among adolescents are increasing. Many people with mental disorders are not adequately cared for, because they lack qualified service providers and access to treatment. This article also lists some challenges and possible solutions, including multidisciplinary and culturally sensitive service models for children's mental health, and introduces relevant laws, policies and regulations.
