Abstract

This essay explores how international students’ mother tongue affects their pronunciation of Mandarin. It primarily focuses on the challenges that students face while learning the language, the variables that impact on their ability to learn the language and the solutions that students believe can overcome the influence of their mother tongue on pronunciation. Through interviews with 20 international students from the International College of Jiangsu Normal University in Xuzhou, China, it was found that international students have difficulties with the tones of Mandarin, the vowels, the consonants and some pronunciation habits. Moreover, the syllable structure, physical characteristics and culture-related factors of international students’ native languages all affect Mandarin pronunciation to a certain extent. This essay also proposes solutions for international students to overcome the difficulties including changing pronunciation habits, understanding differences in perceived phonological systems reducing barriers to cultural differences and continuous practice feedback.
