Abstract

This article reviews the position of indigenous women in the economic system of indigenous community, henceforth referred to as indigenous economy, by analyzing the experience of indigenous women in their struggle for livelihoods. Indigenous women have been marginalized in various domains—family, indigenous community, state, and even the global market. By using the concept of livelihoods and feminist political economy, this article aims to illustrate how the complexity of women’s marginalization in indigenous community affects the position of indigenous women in indigenous economy across various domains of life. This article also elaborates on how the perception of the role of indigenous women is influenced by the complicated process of the acknowledgement of indigenous people’s rights in the national scope, the shift in the meaning of livelihood in household and community domains which are closely tied with the development of indigenous economy. We identify the position of indigenous women in indigenous economy based on the access to land, fulfilment of economic needs based on intensity with considerations of the management of indigenous women’s knowledge and division of works, the power dynamics in the sources of livelihood, and the amount of control possessed by indigenous women in indigenous economy of household and community domains, which are under the influence of the global market.
