- Abstract
The Awakening has long been seen as the herald works of new women, in which the heroin Edna is seen as the predecessor of new women. This article, through the method "covert progression" put forward by Professor Shen Dan, explores the details in this novel, in an effort to find the hidden covert progression which conflicts with the surface narrative. This covert progression satirizes the seeming theme of this novel-marriage, maternal love and female independence, which shows the conservative stand of Kate Chopin.
