Abstract

According to a report published in the Times of India in October 2023, during the 2022-23 financial year, 23% of the Indian corporate houses, allocated and prioritized their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds for environmental projects. It has been found that Indian corporate entities are increasingly allocating their CSR funds to the environment and sustainability. Corporate Social Responsibility took flight globally with the launch of the UN Global Compact in 2000 and India has been a part of this since the very beginning. Essentially, ethical practices, contributing towards economic growth and improving and positively impacting the lives of the employees and the society at large by business houses, are the motives behind environmental management (EM) and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). To this effect, CSR spending has been made mandatory for a certain category of companies that will have to spend at least 2% of their three-year average net profits on CSR. This paper intends to showcase, evaluate and analyse the performance of major corporate houses in India on environmental, social, and governance factors as well as their progress in meeting targets and commitments. The methodology used is both qualitative as well as quantitative with analyzing the secondary data available at various sources for the purpose.
