- Abstract
Plastic is an essential item of every Indian household and during this pandemic the usage of plastic is unavoidable. India produces almost 3.3 MMT of plastic waste every year which is quite alarming. This article provides a comparative analysis of the Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2021 (12th August 2021) to the Plastic Waste Rules, 2016 focusing on the concept of Extended Producers Responsibility. The paper showcases an examination of how the phasing out of all Single-Use Plastics (SUP) by 2023 would be accepted by the vendors. The authors have also analysed the existing Indian judicial developments concerning plastic usage and address the following research questions with recommendations:
How effective are the Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2021, 2022 and 2023?
What are the fundamental obstacles that the vendors will face to phase out Single-Use Plastics by 2023?
