- Abstract
The article firstly reveals the history of the establishment and development of the hospitality industry in Harbin, the capital of the Chinese Eastern Railway (CER) in the late XIX - early XX century. Harbin is one of the largest cities of the Northeast of China which was founded in 1898 as the central point of railway construction. Rapid construction pace turned it into a city of European level in two decades. A large number of temporary people who came to construction with the purpose of big earnings contributed to the rapid development of the hospitality industry: hotels, restaurants, entertainment sphere. And even the beginning of the Russo-Japanese war of 1904-1905 did not, as usual, lead to a decrease in business activity in this sphere, but, on the contrary, stimulated even greater development, as, bas-ically, supplies of troops were passing through Harbin, and money continued to enter the sphere of hospitality in large quan-tities. To reveal the theme archival sources, memoirs of contem-poraries and periodicals published in the Far East including Harbin were used. The history of both the industry itself and the activity of the main entrepreneurs - hoteliers and restaurateurs are shown.
