Abstract

Stunting is a condition where a child has a length or height that is less than their age and the most common form of malnutrition in children. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between stunting and salivary flow rate with dental caries (def-t) in elementary school-age children in Abeli District. Material and Methods: This was an analytical observational study with cross sectional design of 100 elementary school-aged children. Results: The study results indicate that a relationship between nutritional status variables (p-value = 0.000 < 0.05) and salivary flow rate (p-value = 0.000 < 0.05) to the dependent variable (dental caries). There was also a relationship between dental caries with age (p = 0.024), parents’ education (p = 0.001), parents’ occupation (p = 0.001), and parents’ income (p = 0.000) while no relationship was observed for gender (p = 0.863) with dental caries. Multivariate analysis revealed that salivary flow rate was the most influential variable on dental caries (p = 0.013). Conclusion: Stunting and low salivary flow rate are associated with development of dental caries in elementary school-aged children. Health workers at the Puskesmas in Abeli District are encouraged to conduct education on dental health and stunting prevention.
