Abstract

This study aims to analyze usage of WhatsApp among Murabbi (educator) in exchanging Information and the self-disclosure of Ta’aruf partners. Ta’aruf interpreted as a form of introduction in order to know more deeply about the prospective husband or wife before carrying out marriage. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with a case study approach that occurs in Wahdah Islamiyah community organizations (organizations). The phenomenon was studied using new media theory and communication privacy management theory. The data is then obtained based on observation and in-depth interviews with purposive sampling technique on choosing the informants. The results showed that Murabbi using media WhatsApp as a personal media that are interactive and privacy in exploring the personal information of Ta’aruf partner. The ease of use in using WhatsApp is fast, easy, and has a lot of features, so the Ta’aruf partner understand each other easily. The self-disclosure process that Ta’aruf pairs do is a transactional communication process mediated by Murabbi.
