Abstract

The abstract should summarize the contents of the paper in short terms, i.e. 15–250 words. This research aims to investigate the environmental impact of nickel mining by comparing public opinion in China and Indonesia, the world’s largest producer and main consumer of nickel, respectively. The study analyzed a decade’s worth of media reports from China Daily and Detik.com using a mixed-methods approach, including textual and content analysis alongside the Corpus-Assisted Discourse Study (CADS) model. The Study findings illustrate a marked divergence in public sentiment between China and Indonesia regarding nickel mining. China’s discourse predominantly accentuates positive sentiment, emphasizing the proactive approach to nickel mining as a vital component in producing green energy. Conversely, In Indonesia, public discussions often highlight the environmental and social consequences of the nickel mining process, particularly regarding downstream activities and the pollution-related challenges faced by affected communities, thus contributing to an adverse discourse. This comprehensive analysis intends to promote critical thinking and raise global awareness about environmental sustainability and ethical mining practices, contributing to multidisciplinary studies on global environmental challenges and innovative climate change mitigation strategies.
