- Abstract
The Bodhisattva’s crown, with birds holding ribbons in their beaks, was popular in Dunhuang caves’ murals from the 5th to 7th centuries. It originated from Persian Sasanian, appeared in the murals of Qiuci Caves in Xinjiang during the 4th and 5th centuries, and spread to Dunhuang from Qiuci in the middle of the 5th century. It was in the mid-5th century that China gained control of the region from the Hexi Corridor to the Qiuci Kingdom, and Buddhism, which had been suppressed by Emperor Daowu of the Northern Wei Dynasty, was once again revived in China. The spreading of the crown is mainly in the form of images rather than entities. Compared with Qiuci, Bodhisattva’s Crown with Birds holding ribbons in its beak in Dunhuang Caves is more casual in details and usage scenarios, indicating that it had transformed to pure decoration due to the loss of original cultural background during the propagation.
