- Abstract
Sultan Ngarum is a Javanese manuscript originating from Indramayu. Although Sultan Ngarum is a Javanese manuscript, the names of the characters in it (Sultan Ngarum and Seh Subakir) are not names originating from Java, but refer to an Islamic country outside Java. This raises the importance of Sultan Ngarum manuscript to be studied further as a Javanese literary work that has been influenced by Islam. Another interesting aspect is the trait that becomes the figure of Sultan Rum—the ability to receive message from God, or the above world. This special trait appears in description of Sultan Rum figure but rarely analysed in a methodological way. Moreover, the figure of Sultan Rum appears frequently in manuscripts, both in Javanese and Malay manuscript. It makes the figure important to be analysed as a part of understanding the cultural view of Nusantara people in general, and Indramayu people in specific. The culture concept from Koentjaraningrat was applied to explain three layers of culture, which were the mind, the behaviour and the product. The mind was the inner part which influenced the presence of the future vision received by Sultan Rum. Then, the Islamic vision was explained by the concept of vision and the appearance process was explained by using the maqamat stations concept from at-Tirmidhi.
