This paper takes the tragic heroine in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly as the starting point and tries to summarize the characteristics of Puccini’s opera characters, i.e. “small characters - big sorrow”, and analyzes the causes of this characteristic from three perspectives: the specificity of the time, the emergence of realistic opera, and personal motivation. He also analyzes the causes of this characteristic from three perspectives: the specificity of the time, the creation of realistic opera, and his personal motivation.
