- Abstract
Hirayama Hisao (1974) proposed that the ancestral tone value of the Han ancestral language can be estimated by using the comparative method of “historical linguistics”. There are two specific methods: “inter-dialect comparison method” and “internal comparison method”. Based on this, the tones of the south Min dialect were reconstructed diachronically, and the evolution process of the base tone and the sandhi tone of the modern dialects was deduced. Hisao Hirayama (2016) conducted further deductions based on the south Min dialect of Guangdong. As a subordinate dialect of Chaoshan dialects, Guangdong Chaoyang dialect is quite different from other dialects in the region in terms of phonetics, and the tonal differences (including the base tone and the sandhi tone) are particularly significant. Based on the data obtained in the field investigation, this paper introduces the tones of Chaoyang dialect in different locations, expounds its main characteristics, and reconstructs the ancestral tone values in this area, and deduces its different evolution processes in the base tone and the sandhi tone.
