- Abstract
From the perspective of Paratextual-textual narrative, the three main chapters in Dessa Rose written by Shirley Ann Williams establish two kinds of communities, and explore the relationship between the community and the individual. In The Darky, through the common experience and resonance of the black people, the emotional community is established; In The Wench, black women and the white woman establish a cross-racial community through mutual exploration and gradual understanding; In The Negress, as the representative of the individual in the community, Dessa’s growth shows the development of the individual in the community. What’s more, the significance of Dessa Rose lies not only in the discussion of the community in literature, but also in the author’s concern for reality and expectation for the future.
