Abstract

In both Chinese and Western contexts, “translation” has the connotation of “interpretation”. James Legge’s “translation” of Taoist classics is accompanied by “interpretation” in his “translation event” from beginning to end. Ancient Chinese commentators hold that what “Ching”(经) renders is “Tao”(道). Legge’s “translating Classics”(译经) also has the dimension of “rendering Tao”(述道). “Tao” is based on “ben”(本), and that “ben” being established, “Tao” naturally grows up. By the approaches of “ben” and “Tao”, perhaps we can get the dimensions of “context”, “language”, “text”, “connotation” and “interpretation”, and thereby probe into Legge’s translation and commentary of Taoist classics.
