- Abstract
Cultural taboos, as a very important social phenomenon, have a great influence on the intercultural communication. Therefore carrying out the research about the difference of cultural taboos is very significant to promote international exchange and the world harmony. This thesis starts with the explanation of the definition of taboos and its origins. Then the differences of taboos between China and Western countries are illustrated in details from the following aspects such as the religious belief, social communication, festivals, dietary, numbers, colours, animals and gift-giving. After that, the author mainly talks about the influences of cultural taboos on intercultural communications both from the positive side and from the negative side. Finally the thesis summarizes the significance of carrying out the research about the differences of cultural taboos between China and Western countries, pointing out that such a research not only will be helpful to decrease the misunderstanding and the conflict between different countries, but also it will be favourable to the harmonious coexistence of the mankind and the building-up of a beautiful world together.
