Abstract

Directional antennas in wireless local area networks (WLANs) offer more benefits than traditional omni-directional antennas. Use of directional antenna can increase the spatial reuse and largely reduce the radio interference. In this paper, we attempt to propose a new medium access control (MAC) protocol utilizing the directional antennas and the multi-channels access mechanism without any acknowledgement of location information of the nodes in the network. Simulation results show that our scheme performs better than IEEE 802.11, which produces significant improvements from system throughput, average access delay and packet dropping rate over the omni-directional communications with single channel.
