The Trend of Box Office Performance During 2021 National Day Holiday

Abstract

Movies, a common form of entertainment, are one of the ways for people to escape the busy life for some short time, especially during the holidays. This paper focuses on analyzing the relationship between the box office and popular movie genres during the Chinese National Day Holiday Golden Week. We utilized visualization in R-Studio to demonstrate the box office situations during the Chinese National Day Holiday Golden Week from 2018 to 2021. We have also compiled a list of movies that have been determined to be still showing in 2021 based on the information cinemas and distributors offered to the public. In the visualization analysis, we also include most prevailing genres and make a prediction that Changjin Lake, which combines action, war, dramatic and history genres together, would rank the top for the box office. Moreover, as the last movie in the whole National Holiday movie series, My Parents and I will also enter the top three even with a lack of action genre. Based on past box office data, it is expected that during the Chinese National Day Holiday, children’s movies would dominate the box office. Therefore, we believe that animation movies released during the National Day are more likely to gain a great result.
