- Abstract
This research aimed to investigate the form of refusal strategy in the situational comedy and to figure out the structure of refusal strategy used by Sheldon Cooper, Ph.D. The researcher used Sheldon Cooper, Ph.D.’s utterances showed as refusal as the research subject. The researcher collected the data through the dialogue. The research approach was a qualitative approach with a descriptive analysis. The results showed that the strategies of refusal in the conversation among participants in The Big Bang Theory, especially Sheldon Cooper, Ph.D., such as refusal with direct explanation, refusal with a rhetorical statement, refusal with sarcasm and refusal with indirect. The investigation concluded that direct explanation dominantly in all situations.
